Thanks a million to everyone for your fantastic support over the last few weeks as over €100,000 has been raised so far! The following events will take place during the week. The Erris Pony Club will be running sponsored rides on Sunday July 27 and there will also be a sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick on the same day. On Wednesday July 30 a 25 card game will take place in the Turlough Community Centre, Castlebar and a Tea Day will be held at the Irish Wheelchair Association, Logmore, Belmullet, on Thursday July 31.

Youth disco and mountain climb for Marie Carolan

Here’s what’s happening during the next week: a youth underage disco in the Bangor Sports Complex tonight (Friday); the annual Tony & Daniel O’Donnell memorial mountain climb and Mass at the top of Cnoc na Scallop, Barnatra, at 2pm on Sunday August 3 (with a barbecue and music in McGuire’s pub afterwards); and a sponsored pony ride from Bangor to Belmullet on Friday August 8. And don’t forget to buy a ticket for the Marie Carolan Fund Dance at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on August 17.

Hallowe’en Ball a scary success!

The Marie Carolan Foundation Hallowe’en Ball which took place at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel showcased an array of fancy dress, and Marie Carolan turned up for the event, where she picked the winner of a brand new Ford Focus, with Seán Doherty from Ceathrú Thaidhg being the lucky winner. Pamela O’Donnell from Attycunane, Belmullet, won the second prize of a 40-inch television.

Solitaire departs for UK port

Following a week fraught with continuing tension between protesters and Shell E & P Ireland and the undertaking of a hunger strike by Maura Harrington, a resolve in the contentious issue may have been attained when at lunch time Thursday SEPIL released a statement in which it confirmed that “the Solitaire will leave Killybegs today for a UK port where deep water berthing facilities are available”.

Harrington hunger strike continues

High-profile Shell to Sea campaigner Maura Harrington has vowed to continue her hunger strike until written confirmation is given that the Solitaire is out of Irish territorial waters. At the time of going to print yesterday evening (Thursday) she was in her car at Glengad maintaining her protest.

Ballyhaunis woman wins Irish ladies’ windsurfing title

Ballyhaunis native Laoise Ní Dhúda currently living in Tarmon, Blacksod proudly won the national title in ladies’ windsurfing, as well as the Belmullet event title during the bank holiday show-down.

Rugby volunteers needed in Erris

Following on from the success of the Connacht Rugby and Mayo Sports Partnership Open Days held at Iorras Aontaithe FC in December they are now planning to set up a Mini (underage) Rugby Club with a number of volunteers being sought.
